Hey friends! With the release of BDO on Steam and the future release of this game to XBox as well, we'd like to put together a little FAQ for the new roleplayers who will be joining our community: something they will see when they first register and visit us. So we'd love your help and input!

If you feel so inclined, you can volunteer a question and then also the answer to that question.

Topics should relate to things a new member of our community would want to know, and what a beginner to this game as a whole would want to know. RP hotspots, tips about where to find RP, what to do about RP walking, how to set up the UI, how/where to get costumes, how to do your roleplay (say vs. party), etc.

We'll use this to prepare a guide and ensure the questions we choose to include are credited to you :)

Thanks again for coming together to build us up!

Please post here right on this thread :)

BDO does not have an emote system. Exposition and dialogue are combined together into one post. For example:

Torvim smiles, the crows feet creasing beneath his glasses as he considers the question. "So, when there is dialogue, I just put it in between quotation marks?" he asks. He ponders, stroking tanned calloused fingers through white whiskers. "Seems easy enough," he adds.

If you need to communicate something out of character, denote it with some sort of mark up such as enclosing it in ((double parenthesis)) [double brackets] or ||anything|| <<suitably>> {{similar}}.

Some animations are triggered by specific keywords. By opening your chat box and clicking the box with an S next to it (at least on the PC) , you can bring up the pose menu that will list the animations and the different key words that will trigger them. These can be edited or even removed.

All characters on your account share the same Family name. This acts as a sort of public account name. You can fold this into your RP or just ignore it and give each of your characters a different last name, separating them with an underscore.

All characters share the same storage and stables. So long as a mount is stored, any character on your account can access them from the stable where they are stored. You can used the shared storage to swap items between characters.

Trading and Marketplace tips

BDO has very limited player trading. Food and potions are on the very short list of items that can be swapped from one player to another. Anything else has to be crafted, looted, or purchased off the market place by you.

Cash shop (Pearl) items are sometimes sold on the market place. Most of these are cosmetic and give no benefit in the game.

In order to get items that you want, it is important to understand a few things about the marketplace.

Pre orders - You can pre order items on the marketplace. Pearl items cannot be pre ordered. When an item is preordered, a value equal to or greater than the purchase price of the item is entered. This value is then removed from your storage or inventory and set aside to satisfy the pre order. Any excess amount over the price of item is eaten and the seller only gets the sale price. Pre orders go to the highest pre order for that item that is active at the time. See registration for more information on how preorders are completed.

Notifications: You can set the marketplace up so that it notifies you when an item is registered. More on registration below.

Registration - I am going to break this up into 2 sections.

Pearl Items: Pearl items cannot be preordered. When a pearl item is registered for the marketplace, it appears on the market 1-2 minutes afterwards. This means you have very little time to get to a marketboard and place a bid on it.

Non-pearl items: These can be preordered. When a non pearl item is registered to the marketplace, a random number is generated to see if that item goes to satisfy the highest current pre-order or if the item goes directly to the markerplace for bidding. If the item bypasses the Pre order queue, it appears on the marketplace 8-15 minutes after registration.

• On NA we RP on the Calpheon 2 channel and we have lots of Europeans that roleplay on the NA servers without issue. The EU roleplay scene is hit-or-miss, and lately it's been very quiet.

• The best place to find unplanned, random pick-up RP is Heidel's northern tavern, which is called The Lily Tavern. Most people reach Heidel by level 16. Here's an image of its location:

• A lot of people join RP guilds for more roleplaying opportunities but it's very much possible to remain guildless or join a PvE guild. Check out the events tab at the top to find public events, or the guild's section on the forums for active guilds that are advertising. You can only join one guild per account so make sure you find something that's suitable to your needs, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

• The BDRP Discord is always booming with activity. We don't bite! Just make sure you're respectable of the rules, it's not 18+ so be aware of your audience. There is also a lore tab on the Discord for any questions, and also a 'search' function in Discord to find already-discussed topics.

• You're not going to learn everything about BDO within the first few months. Take it slow and tackle one thing at a time, there's no rush and plenty of guides online to help you along the way. Dulfy has plenty of guides that will help you begin your journey.

• To make your character walk, hold down the CAPS LOCK button. An alternative is to set a NUM LOCK key. I've detailed a guide on setting that up here.

♥ Backing into certain walls will put your character into a backwards lean pose

♥ Backing into some level flat surfaces will put your character into sitting poses
(press Q to shuffle through poses)

♥ You can also sit on certain ledges by pressing Q on the edge of a flat surface
(however you are relegated to only 2 sitting poses)

♥ You can have up to five residences (rooms to decorate) in all of the BDO world and these do not cost contribution points

In addition to what Torvim has said:

You can set some animations to Alt+Shift+(1-0) to trigger whenever you want. If you press enter, then click on the S button that appears next to the text entry field, you can set a slash command to different animations and poses (e.g., /liedown or /flirt). If you then click on the M button next to the text entry field, you can then type the slash command in one of the ten available slots, and then trigger the animation whenever you like by pressing the appropriate key combination. You can also use this menu to have it send text messages the same way.

Party vs General chat: Most roleplay happens in General chat because it is range-limited (unlike all other forms of chat, which are global either to your server group or all servers in the case of guild/whisper/world) and does not cost energy to use like Server Group or "Roleplay". However, many players will use party chat when in crowded areas, or in player homes to help "instance" chat so that it can be more easily seen or kept private between small groups of players. Remember that parties can only have up to five players in them!

Costumes, to some, are a major part of a character's personality. They are available for purchase in the game's menu <esc> by clicking the pearl shop icon. Costumes can be purchased by pearls, which is obtained by using Kakao Cash by means of real money, or through the Marketplace for silver.

Once a costume is bought, it is bound to the character equipped on and cannot be shared by any other characters in your account. Though don't worry, the costume won't take up inventory since it is a pearl shop item and will be stored in the pearl section of your personal inventory.

Tip: If you are planning to buy a costume through the marketplace, it is good to know that they are on high demand and almost always bid on. It is not guaranteed you will successfully purchase a costume if put up for sale.

Tip: Costumes can be dyed through the use of Merv pallets (temporary) or dyes purchased on the pearl shop/loyalty section (permanent) so get creative!

Tip: Pearl shop costumes are not the only form of costumes. There are schematics that can be purchased from Luxury Vendors by gaining amity points and crafted from a Costume workshop.

Tip: A costume has buffs if equipped with the same parts of a set (Weapon and sub weapon buffs are separate from armor parts).
