Crucio De Mongart couldn’t find any reason to keep up with the on-going war. He wasn’t a faithful servant of Elion like his late father, and the unrest among the people from the past plague was waning. He was also displeased with how Calpheon King Dahad Seric was treating him like a rookie.
Year 235 Elion Calendar
The black death devastates Calpheon, Keplan, Heidel, and Olvia. The provinces of the western continent form a military alliance and begin an expedition against Valencia. The war between the Alliance and Valencia begins.
Year 265 Elion calendar.
Crucio Domongatt couldn’t find any reason to keep up with the on-going war. He wasn’t a faithful servant of Elion like his late father, and the unrest among the people from the past plague was waning. He was also displeased with how Calpheon King Dahad Seric was treating him like a rookie. At the age of 37, Crucio was crowned king of Heidel and informed Calpheon that Heidel will no longer take part in the expedition against Valencia.
The people who were most upset by this news were the Calpheon priests. With their believers already losing faith from excessive instigation by the church, a sudden halt to the expedition was likely to shake the very foundation of their power. The expedition had already left several churches in their wake, and this could be a chance to expand the faith all the way to Valencia.
Crucio was threatened with excommunication while being pressured by Dahad. It was a tough situation for Crucio. Continuing to hold out from the expedition could lead to a war with Calpheon. Furthermore, many of the military leaders of Heidel were devout believers of Elion who used to serve under his religious father.
After several private communications, Crucio decided to join the expedition. He wasn’t ready to face such external and internal challenges so soon after his inauguration, and Dahad also accepted Crucio’s subtle hints that this would be the last time.
Dahad, in exchange, proposed a massive expedition claiming that they should at least reach the walls of Valencia if they aren’t to become the laughingstock of future generations. Preparations for the expedition alone took two years.
Domongatt knew the road to the Black Desert like the back of his hand so he believed that all he would have to do is drag behind, and consider it as a trip. But nothing is ever that easy. The winds that started whipping up at the beginning of the expedition became a blinding gale by the time they reached Mediah. They had yet to even come close to the desert.
The alliance set camp under the foreign walls and had to wait for the wind to settle down. A week had passed before they were able to view Mediah.
What could have happened here in Mediah? There were rumors circulating from the caravans of how Media has changed yet no one expected anything like what the expedition came to see. Walls with built in barracks surrounded the city, and black smoke rose endlessly through the many chimneys.
Dahad insisted that they push forward. He, as well as many others, was intrigued by the sudden development of Mediah and wanted to learn how they managed to achieve it. Yet delaying the march towards Valencia any further could risk supply complications. The wind kicked up again as the expedition reached the Black Desert. This time there was also rain. Wait, rain? In the desert?
That was when someone spotted a red flag. It meant that they were now in Valencian territory. The Elion priests accompanying the expedition knelt down to give their prayers. At the same time, the expedition went to work with setting up base under the howling wind. But it wasn’t long until a storm engulfed the expedition making day as dark as night.
By the time Crucio regained consciousness, he found himself within a sand pit and spotted a red flag that was broken off. The storm must have damaged the Valencians far worse.
The situation was no longer about conquest but about survival. The sky was darkening again, and the road back home was perilous.
Sand storms and land subsidence continued to torment the expedition on their retreat, and their way home was blocked by the Demi River that stretched endlessly due to prolonged rain. It took one month for the river to return to a state where the expedition could cross and Crucio was able to catch his breath once they crossed the delta. Then came regrets for joining the expedition.
That is how the last expedition ended.
The order of Elion rewarded the soldiers and claimed that the Valencians wouldn’t be able to get back up after the expeditions great victory. Whatever it may be, they needed some kind of respite after all those disasters.
Heidel Castle and the Serendian plains were thankfully untouched by the disasters, but the swamps of the southern regions had expanded.
So the war that couldn’t be stopped by people was stopped by nature and peacetime, for recovery, has come. Meanwhile, Calpheon, which lost its king to the storms, saw to the coronation of its new twenty year old king, Guy Seric.
Year 275 Elion calendar.
7 years have passed before the Heidel merchant guild visited Mediah. The past years weren’t wasted by the Medians, and they have been able to develop their city even further.Domongatt, having already witnessed the change during the last expedition, ordered the merchant guild to find out how Mediah was able to achieve the level of development they’ve attained and soon found out the importance of Black Stones.
After receiving a report of a young Naga carrying around a Black Stone shard, Domongatt immediately set out to the southern marsh region. He believed that this will be his chance to get back at Calpheon for pressuring him into joining the disastrous expedition, but Domongatt’s true misfortune hadn’t even started yet.
Calpheon was also desperately searching for a source of Black Stones to claim as their own. Yet not even a scrap of the precious material was found in Calpheon’s territory. Once the news of Black Stone discovery in the Keplan quarries and Serendia reached the young king’s ear, Guy Seric decided that he would have to act quickly.
Year 276 Elion calendar.
Guy Seric pushed forward close to the Heidel watch towers in the Serendian plains after conquering Keplan without much of a fight. But Heidel was a formidable foe, so the Calpheon king took his elites and ambushed Heidel castle during the dead of night.
Domongatt was helpless against the ambush and lost his castle. What was worse was that he got captured by Calpheon. Despite being captured, he refused to surrender, and told the Heidel envoy, who came over to check his status, to keep on fighting regardless of what may happen to him.
After hearing their king’s order to fight on, Cliff led his forces southwest in an attempt to take over Keplan while Armstrong crossed the Demi river to take the fight to the Calpheon plains. Guy Seric stood his ground using Keplan’s famed heavy infantry, but it looked like huge losses for Calpheon would be inevitable.
Even if Calpheon was to win the war, the two generals were on the verge of mounting a death count that could surpass that of the Black Death.
This forced Guy Seric to take a change of course. What he really needed was the Black Stones from the Serendian swamps, so he offered a treaty instead of demanding surrender. Domongatt faced a hard decision with a massive bloodshed about to happen. As long as Heidel doesn’t surrender there will always be another chance.
Domongatt was able to return home after one year of Calpheon sending dispatches to see to that the terms of the treaty were being kept. The people of Heidel were understanding of Domongatt. The watch towers were declared neutral territory so the remaining Heidel forces had to set up camp in the west. Despite all that had happened, both Cliff and Armstrong respected their king’s decision. There were those who spoke of him as a coward behind his back, but Domongatt was unfazed.
What really troubled him was the sight of Calpheon extractors in the Serendian Marshlands. It was around this time Crucio Domongatt’s health turned for the worse.
Year 281 Elion calendar.
The sudden death of Guy Seric shocked the entire west continent. He had just turned thirty and was in good health. Rumors of him being poisoned started to spread despite the official announcement that revealed the cause of his death to be due to an unknown disease. All the more better. Crucio believed that his chance came sooner than expected. He believed that Calpheon will be helpless from the vacuum of power.
Crucio summoned Cliff from the West Guard Camp to discuss on whether or not they should annul the treaty. Cliff believed that acting too hasty would only provide Calpheon with a cause to unite against and proposed that they wait and see how things develop. Grand chamberlain Jordine Ducas was also present during this conversation. He was recommended by Cliff after Crucio’s health started to get worse. His keen judgment and capability made Jordine Ducas an invaluable asset to Crucio’s court.
Jordine Ducas argued that since Guy Seric’s likely murder would be the work of the church and merchant groups and not a result of internal power struggle, Heidel’s action will be irrelevant to how well Calpheon will be united.
Although he agreed with Jordine Ducas, Crucio decided to follow Cliff’s advice and kept watch of the situation in Calpheon. The disorder within Calpheon went through was an unexpected turn of events, but was quickly settled. Calpheon, under the rule of a new parliamentary government, became stronger than ever.
Jordine Ducas became grand chamberlain at the age of twenty five. He first joined the military to avenge his family who were slaughtered by Calpheon soldiers pillaging Heidel castle before becoming chamberlain. His position was more close to a chancellor than a chamberlain though. This was because Crucio lowered his own position to castellan after the Calpheon extractors were built, claiming that he failed his duty as king. This is also why General Cliff is called captain.
Jordine Ducas claimed that it would take no longer than five years before Calpheon loses its strength. He contended that leaving their fate to the merchant guilds would turn out to be a bad call, and the church that was supposed to keep the guilds in check was too occupied in expanding their influence.
He convinced Crucio to raise taxes, for Heidel would have to rebuild its army during that time and would require a huge budget to do so. This was also while Crucio was thinking of rebuilding Heidel Castle.
Year 283 Elion calendar.
The peasants rose up against Heidel. Despite the bad harvest of this year, taxes still had remained high. To make things worse, the savages had become aggressive lately and ruined what little crops remained for harvest.
Aware of the changes in Calpheon with its parliamentary system, the peasants had Al Rhundi represent them at Heidel castle. As a result, the castellan imprisoned and tortured him as a warning and threw him out in neutral territory. The peasants were enraged by this, but what could simple farmers do against an army preparing for war? There was an uprising, if one could call it that, but they were quickly dispersed by the first sight of soldiers. The active members of the uprising couldn’t go back to their normal lives because of the bounties on their heads.
Al Rhundi was one of those people. One day, against his own will, he suddenly found himself as the leader of the uprising and took refuge in the old castle grounds. Afterward, more people tired from the continuing hardship gathered under Al Rhundi and thus provided an excuse for Jordine Ducas to raise taxes.
Peasant revolt? There was no such thing; the only thing that actually happened was a formal complaint from the peasants. Another incident that happened that year was a sudden streak of light in the night sky that was soon followed by the resurgence of violent activities of the savages and the appearances of various monsters among them.
Some claimed of seeing the stones come to life. People called this the Tower of Will incident because it is recorded that something similar had happened after the ancients built the Tower of Will.

Rumors of the sudden increase of outsiders in Velia Village (Balenos) has started to spread.
