THE FALL OF MEDIAH & THE OCCUPATION BY THE SAVAGES. Mediah was placed between Calpheon and Valencia while their war waged on claiming countless lives. And amidst all the chaos, the reigning king of Media -- Variz the Second -- was the most incompetent and unimaginative king of Mediah’s history.
Year 235 Elion calendar
When Calpheon held out a persuasive hand towards Mediah, Variz II announced upfront that he had no intentions of going to war. He opened the way to Valencia for Calpheon and expressed meager condolences to Valencia. The person who discovered the chance presented to Mediah with these turn of events was the Alchemist and head of the Median merchant guild, Neruda Shen. He recruited skilled blacksmiths and struck a deal with Calpheon. The Median merchant guild will supply for the Calpheon alliance in exchange for black shards the alliance acquires during the war so that the merchant guild can continue production. Not knowing the value of black shards at the time, Calpheon gladly accepted the offer.
Knowledge was not the only advantage held by the Median merchant guild. They used the magma cave in Mediah as a natural furnace. By taking advantage of the even terrain and small lava pits within the cave, the merchant guild melted metal and black shards to produce weapons at a higher speed than Calpheon was capable of. And once those supplies were shipped off to Calpheon, an equal amount of black shards were sent back in return.
Calpheon was too occupied with their expedition that they weren’t aware of the losses happening behind their back. Around that time delegations from Valencia met with a small number of Median merchant guild officials in secret.
The Median merchant guild handed over a portion of the black shards they received from Calpheon to Valencia and in return the merchant guild was able to secure trading rights within Valencia.
Once Calpheon’s production technology improved they realized the potential of black shards. Feeling that they’ve been scammed, Calpheon tried to buy back the shards they’ve given but the Median merchant guild declined. Media further displayed their diplomatic ties with Valencia by making the religion of A’al, the god of Valencia, the official religion of Altinova which previously had no restrictions on religion.
Year 266 Elion calendar
Yet all good things come to an end and even Mediah, in its prime, had to surrender to the force of natural disasters. Continuous sandstorms and drought forced the savages to abandon their villages in the highlands and beyond the deserts. Many of them migrated to Mediah where the devastation was less severe. Not long after the magma cave and mines were abandoned due to various incident and accidents including attacks from savages.
Year 273 Elion calendar
The Median merchant guild started to use their fortune they’ve amassed between Calpheon and Valencia for building up a city.
Not before long Media, which previously didn’t have anyplace to act as a focal point, had a capital city Altinova. Once Altinova was lined with fortifications, merchants and villagers from all over Media started to flock to the capitol. The savages that have been a problem was strangely quite during this time and all was still within Media except for Altinova.
And it was during that time the discreet movements occurred throughout the outskirts of Media. No one would have imagined the chaos that followed.
Year 268 Elion calendar
The beginning of the disaster can be traced back to Tarrif.
A small village located in the western region of Media next to the Junad river, Tariff was a secluded gathering of Sorcerers who had no interest in the outside world. About 300 years ago, the Sorcerer Kartian lead a group of Sorcerers from the east and settled in Mediah and thus Tarrif was built but with a sacrifice.
The rules of Tarrif were based around the tome of Kartian which she left before her death. Within this tome lies the power and vows a sorcerer must keep. But the power of the tome became too much of a burden. This was because the sorcerers were losing powers from leaving their homeland. The ones who inherited the tome were unable to handle the power within and became physically or mentally damaged. And thus a new tome was written and the original was sealed away.
Each new leader of the village, who was chosen by being the next most powerful sorcerer, added a new layer to the seal so that the power of the indestructible tome will never be released.
Year 273 Elion calendar
The next in line after Ahon Kirus for leadership of Tarif was a woman named Ilezra. But she committed the ultimate taboo by going after the power of the original tome of Kartian. Ilezra recklessly gained the power within the tome and was gravely injured in the process but was able to barely escape the village.
Ilezra then rallied the Elic cultists, believers of the fallen god, to overpower the savages and built a tower in the northern outskirts of Media. Once the tower was completed, a black fog engulfed the whole region with a loud explosion.
Year 277 Elion calendar
Mediah castle went up in flames at the hands of Ilezra. Media was engulfed in total darkness for four days straight. Without the sun or moon, people were only able to rely on a torch and tremble in fear. Altinova was no exception. Some became aggressive and others ran out of the city screaming. The only light they saw was the flames of the burning Media castle.
It was no surprise that the ailing monarchy fell during this time. There were some who grieved over the death of Variz II yet no one rejoiced at the news of the youngest prince’s survival. Ilezra disappeared without a trace only leaving various speculations of her identity.
Year 280 Elion calendar
There were rumors that Ilezra has once again appeared. A group of savages who wore black capes and spoke in human tongue came from the abandoned mine and entered Altinova, claiming it theirs while invoking the name of Ilezra.
Following these group of savages, the vicious Sezek hunters swarmed in to Altinova.
Year 281 Elion calendar
The once orderly Altinova was thrown in Chaos. The Median merchant guild was in no position to force the savages out but also had no intentions of welcoming them. So started the uneasy coexistence within the city walls of Altinova.
